About Us

Western Shores Chapter, NSDAR, meetings are held monthly September through June.  If you would like to attend one of our meetings, please contact our Regent for the day, time, and place.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is a volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism.

Western Shores Chapter, NSDAR, has a rich heritage of promoting DAR objectives and values serving Long Beach, Lakewood, and the surrounding communities, and honoring the Patriots of the American Revolutionary War.

Our chapter projects seek to help students and veterans, and our monthly programs focus on genealogy, historic preservation, education, patriotism, and personal growth.

What is Junior Membership?  Junior Members are a special designation for young ladies ages 18 through 35 who are members of NSDAR. They hold full membership and are encouraged to participate at every level. When qualified, Junior Members may serve as chairmen or officers at the chapter, state, and national levels of our society.  Leadership training is available and encouraged. Juniors often serve as Pages at state meetings and Continental Congress.  Pages are essential to DAR and their service is truly valued.  Junior members provide energy and fresh ideas and are the future of NSDAR. We welcome new junior members to join others in service and fellowship. Come join the fun!

Please join us at one of our monthly meetings! Each meeting features a program of engaging speakers, and member "minute reports" on conservation, our flag, patriots, and other topics.  Please contact us for the exact meeting day, time, and location.  Meetings and events are held at public places conveniently located in or near Long Beach, CA. Many members are from the local area, although local residency is not a requirement for membership in any chapter.

The purpose of Western Shores Chapter, NSDAR, is threefold:

  1. Historic preservation - to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American independence.
  2. Education - to promote knowledge of American history through essay contests and community events.
  3. Patriotic - to cherish, maintain, and extend the institutions of American freedom, to foster true patriotism, and love of country, and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty.

   Finding Your Lineage

Do you have a mother, aunt, grandmother, or first cousin in the DAR? If so, please proceed to the Application Process.

If no known relative was in the DAR, your first step toward membership requires establishing your lineage.

Start with the genealogy worksheet to help point out possible family lines. Write only the data which can be proven.  Once the worksheet is completed, fill out the pedigree chart for persons born 1700-1765, as these are the most likely to have provided service.

The following links are provided to assist you with completing a pedigree chart.

      Identify Your Patriot Ancestor

Once you have followed your lineage, you can begin to identify potential patriots. Service to the cause for American independence can be proven in many ways. The following links will assist you in determining the eligibility of civil or patriotic service for your patriot.

If your ancestor is not listed in the Patriot Index, that does not mean that person did not provide service, it just means that no one has proven their lineage from that person. This means it is up to you to prove that line and service.

 DAR MEMBER ELIGIBILITY

1  We welcome any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background.
2  Proof of lineal bloodline descent from a male or female ancestor who aided in achieving American independence from England between the time of the Battle of Lexington (April 19, 1775) and the withdrawal of British troops from New York (November 26, 1783).
3  You must provide acceptable documentation for each statement of birth, marriage, and death.  And you are responsible for obtaining all of your legal documents to submit to become a member.

While this may sound like a daunting task, our chapter registrar will be happy to help get your documentation in order.  You do not need to have all of your genealogical research completed to start work on a membership application.
